The English Bowls youth Development scheme uses a system that allows Counties and Regions to hold 'Schools of Excellence' to bring together players under the age of eighteen.Currently the age range is split into two 18 - 15 yrs, and under 15yrs. The players in each section undergo assessment based on the skills of the game and are awarded points on a variety of exercises. They are then placed in random groups and play a round robin of singles games each lasting seven ends with three bowls. Points are awarded for winning and the top one or two enter a knockout stage and further points are awarded. At the end of the day the points are totalled and sent away for analysis.Invitations are sent out based on this analysis both for the Regional stage and the National event which for the past two years has been held outdoors at Leamington, even though the qualifying rounds are held indoors. This system has much to comend it while at the same time having some major flaws.

If you wish to practice some of the skills with your young players an example of the exercises with an assessment grid can be found by clicking here.
